The Region
The villa sits in the southwest corner of Bulgaria, where the Rila and Pirin mountains meet. Most of the region's best-known sites are within an hour's drive, which makes the house a practical base for day trips as well as a place to come back to. A car is the easiest way to reach them.
Rila Monastery
The largest and most visited monastery in Bulgaria, founded in the 10th century and listed by UNESCO. Its painted galleries and mountain courtyard are worth half a day.
Seven Rila Lakes
A chain of glacial lakes high in the Rila mountains, reached by chairlift and then on foot. Best from late June to September, once the snow has cleared.
Pirin National Park
A UNESCO-listed alpine park of granite peaks, glacial lakes and old-growth forest. Vihren, the second-highest peak in the country, is the main draw for hikers.
Bansko Ski Resort
Bulgaria's main ski resort, with a gondola and runs for every level through the winter. In summer the same slopes become hiking and mountain-bike trails.
Sandanski & Melnik
Sandanski is a spa town known for its mild climate and mineral springs. Nearby Melnik, the smallest town in the country, sits among sandstone pyramids and is famous for its red wine.
Rupite & Heraclea Sintica
The site of Baba Vanga's church and the ruins of Heraclea Sintica, a Roman town. Warm mineral springs run through the area.
